West Bengal: Medical student from Odisha raped inside Durgapur campus, incident recalls RG Kar horror
A second-year medical student from Odisha was allegedly dragged and raped inside the premises of a private medical college in Durgapur, West Bengal, more than a year after the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case shocked the state, media reports said on Saturday.

According to police sources, the student had stepped out of the campus with a male friend around 8:30 p.m. on Friday. She was allegedly dragged to a secluded area near the campus gate by an unidentified man, who then raped her.
The survivor was later admitted to a hospital for treatment, and police have launched an investigation into the incident.
The victim’s father told India Today that he learned about the attack from his daughter’s friend. “When I reached there, my daughter was in a serious condition, and there was no response from the hospital administration,” he said.
He further alleged that his daughter had gone outside the campus to eat phuchka (golgappas) after being called there by her boyfriend, identified as Wasif Ali. “When she reached the campus gate, around four to five persons were there. One of them raped her, took her mobile phone, and demanded ₹3,000 to return it. Later, the boy who had gone with her brought her back,” he told the channel.
The Durgapur police have registered a case and are verifying CCTV footage from the area.
The latest incident has drawn parallels with the 2024 RG Kar Medical College and Hospital case in Kolkata, where a young doctor was raped and murdered, sparking widespread outrage across West Bengal.
