Trade unions called 12-hours strike evokes little response in Tripura, no impact in capital city

The nationwide strike called by a forum of 10 central trade unions, in Tripura, which was marginal response, but ruling BJP, which has vehemently opposed the strike called by opposition trade unions are seen in different parts of the state including in capital city Agartala’s street picketing against Bandh and the caller were not seen any part of the state picketing in support of Bandh on Wednesday.

A nationwide strike gripped India on Wednesday, as more than ten central Trade Unions, backed by farmer groups and rural worker organizations, launched a general shutdown in protest against the Centre's alleged "anti-worker, anti-farmer, and pro-corporate" policies, which has  disrupted essential services across several states in the country including banking services.

But, the 12-hour Bandh called by the trade unions evoked little response across Tripura and normal life across capital city Agartala remained the same as usual.

Police sources said that most shops and markets were open and vehicles plied almost normally across the state, but mixed response witnessed in few subdivisional towns and till evening due to incessant rain, there was no report of any untoward incident in the state so far.

Though CITU and other Left trade unions did not organize any picketing or gathering in support of the shutdown, none of activists were arrested.

A huge contingent of forces have been deployed in sensitive and important areas, specially in Agartala, where ruling BJP supporters were seen in different streets, picketing against Bandh .

The ruling BJP opposed the shutdown while the opposition Congress supported it.

Congress through a press statement said that the party supported the trade and farmers unions sponsored shutdown on Wednesday in support of their 17-point charter of demands.

However, BJP leader, Tapash Bhattacharjee during a press conference said that his party strongly opposed the shutdown as it would disturb the normal situation of the state and will cause tremendous hardship of working classes. He said that people of the state strongly rejected the Bandh called by Left trade unions and every party of the state, the day to day life remains normal.

While, reports from different districts of the state said that the 12-hours shutdown down does not have any significant impact barring few areas and business establishments including all rural markets and transportation remain the same as usual like other days. Air and railway services also continue the same as its schedules and passengers travelling through flights and trains do not get any hardship to reach airport and railway stations despite difficulties due to incessant rain. Though, state police have made adequate arrangements for passengers. The banking services in nationalized banks along with insurance services including LIC disturbed as the majority of their employees in Agartala joined the strike.

It may be recalled here that the strike is a coordinated action by key Trade Unions including the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS), Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA), Labour Progressive Federation (LPF), United Trade Union Congress (UTUC), along with major farmer groups like the Samyukta Kisan Morcha and public sector employees from the Railways, NMDC Ltd, and steel industries.

The unions are opposing four new labour codes passed by Parliament, stating these weaken workers' rights, limit the right to strike, increase working hours, and dilute employer accountability.

Protesters have demanded scrapping the codes, setting a minimum monthly wage of Rs 26,000, and ensuring equal pay for equal work.

They are also demanding a halt to the privatization of public sector units, the curbing of job outsourcing, and an end to contract-based employment practices, which they argue threaten job security and fair wages.

As a result, banking, insurance, postal services, coal mining, public transport, and industrial production were affected in many parts of the country. Though schools, private offices, and most train services remained functional, isolated disruptions were reported.
