Gopi was travelling with a man identified as Harpreet when the attackers, who were reportedly travelling in a car, chased them and opened fire.
Gopi sustained gunshot injuries and was killed in the firing, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bhupinder Singh Sidhu.
Attackers chased motorcycle, opened fire
According to police, Gopi and Harpreet were riding a motorcycle while some of their friends were travelling behind them in a separate car.
The assailants allegedly opened fire at the car carrying Gopi's friends as well. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the firing and working to establish the complete sequence of events.
Old dispute under investigation
Police suspect that an old dispute between the two sides led to the attack, with an election-related dispute emerging as a key angle in the investigation.
SSP Bhupinder Singh Sidhu said the attackers had been identified and police teams had been formed to apprehend them.
He said the main accused has a criminal background and is allegedly involved in unlawful activities.
Multiple teams conduct raids
Several police teams are conducting raids at different locations as the investigation continues. Authorities said efforts are underway to arrest the accused at the earliest.
The killing has raised fresh concerns over the law-and-order situation in Punjab. The suspected election-related dispute is also likely to put the incident under greater political scrutiny.
