Govt mulls moving impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Varma in cash row: Reports

New Delhi/IBNS: The union government is considering the option of bringing in an impeachment motion against Allahabad High Court judge Yashwant Varma in connection with the discovery of a huge sum of unaccounted cash from his residence earlier this year, media reports said.
The government is weighing on the option of bringing in the motion in the monsoon session of Parliament scheduled for July.
This happens after Justice Varma was charged by a Supreme Court-appointed probe panel.
Then Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna had asked for Justice Varma's resignation but the latter didn't step down.
Following this, the CJI had written to the President and the Prime Minister recommending impeachment of Justice Varma, who was transferred from the Delhi High Court to Allahabad High Court after the cash was discovered.
What happened at Justice Varma's house?
A fire at Justice Varma's residential bungalow in March led to the recovery of a huge pile of unaccounted cash, prompting the Supreme Court collegium to transfer from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad HC.
Justice Varma was out of town when a fire broke out at his residence. Justice Varma's family members had called the fire brigade.
But when the firefighters doused the fire, a huge pile of cash was discovered inside a room. Police were called by the firefighters.
