The MEA said the Indian Consulate in Toronto is in contact with the victim’s family and is providing assistance in coordination with local authorities.
Responding to queries on the incident, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “We are in touch with his family. It's very unfortunate. We convey our deepest condolences.”
"We are also in touch with local authorities as to what the circumstances were that led to the death; we will come to know more of those details. But, we are in touch with local authorities in the matter and also our consulate is extending all possible support to the family of the person who died."
Toronto police said the shooting occurred Tuesday at about 3:34 p.m. near the Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road area, close to the university campus.
Officers responding to a call reporting “unknown trouble” found a male victim with a gunshot wound.
“The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene,” police said, adding that the suspect fled before officers arrived. An investigation is ongoing.
