New Delhi: The Rights and Risks Analysis Group (RRAG) on Tuesday accused the Myanmarese junta, headed by President Min Aung Hlaing, of committing war crimes by deliberately targeting civilians in airstrikes in Myanmar.
“The airstrikes carried out by Myanmar’s military near a market in Kyauktaw town, Arakan Province, at noon local time on 28 September 2026, killed at least 33 people and injured at least 36 others. The victims included civilians, such as vendors, shoppers and pedestrians, who happened to be at the scene. This is a crime against humanity as defined under Article 7 of the Rome Statute of International Criminal Court (ICC).” stated Mr Suhas Chakma, Director of the Rights and Risks Analysis Group (RRAG), a think-tank based in New Delhi.
Across Myanmar, the military junta has deliberately been targeting civilians through airstrikes. On 23 September 2026, junta warplanes reportedly dropped around 20 bombs on two villages along the Kachin–Sagaing supply route, killing at least five civilians.
“The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court should consider initiating an investigation proprio motu into alleged war crimes, including the deliberate targeting of civilians, by the Myanmar military junta headed by President Min Aung Hlaing,” further added Mr Chakma.
