Surat property tycoon’s death: Lover arrested amid 1.3 crore extortion claims
The tragic death of Tushar Ghelani, a prominent real estate developer in Surat, has escalated into a high-stakes legal battle following the arrest of his long-time partner, Poonam Bhadoria.
While police have charged Bhadoria with abetting Ghelani’s suicide through years of alleged financial and mental coercion, she has countered with a bombshell allegation of her own: murder.
On the night of January 31, 2026, Tushar Ghelani reportedly turned his licensed revolver on himself.
He succumbed to his injuries on February 5, the very day his daughter was scheduled to be married.
Following a formal complaint by the Ghelani family, the Umra police launched an intensive probe.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) ZR Desai confirmed that the investigation uncovered a pattern of "constant mental and financial coercion," leading to Bhadoria's arrest.
Allegations of financial duress
The core of the prosecution's case rests on claims that Bhadoria leveraged her 15-year relationship with Ghelani to siphon off significant assets.
It has also been alleged that Bhadoria forced her way into a 50% managing partnership of Blue Papillon Pre-Primary School without any documented investment.
Records suggest she drew approximately Rs 1.37 crore in salary and benefits from the school between 2018 and 2024.
The 'wedding threat'
The tension reportedly peaked in the months leading up to Ghelani's death. The family alleges that in July 2025, Ghelani’s daughters confronted Bhadoria to plead for an end to the harassment. Instead, Bhadoria reportedly demanded a 50% share of all his properties.
The breaking point allegedly occurred on January 31.
According to the family’s statement, Bhadoria called Ghelani and threatened to "create a scene" and publicly disgrace the family at his daughter’s upcoming wedding, a move that police believe may have triggered the fatal act.
In a dramatic twist nine days after Ghelani’s passing, Poonam Bhadoria filed a counter-complaint. She has flatly denied the suicide narrative, alleging instead that the builder was murdered by his own family members.
The Umra police are now navigating a complex "he-said, she-said" scenario. While Bhadoria remains in custody on abetment charges, authorities are also examining her claims against the Ghelani family to ensure a comprehensive investigation into the builder's final hours.
