Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has commissioned a 345 kWp on-grid rooftop solar power plant at the Agartala Coaching Depot, marking another significant step towards promoting renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure across the railway network.
The project has been implemented to harness solar energy by optimally utilizing the available rooftop space at the depot. The initiative aligns with Indian Railways' commitment to environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, and the adoption of clean energy solutions.
According to an official statement issued by NFR on Sunday, the newly installed solar power system is currently generating more electricity than the building consumes, making the facility a net positive energy building. The surplus electricity produced during daytime is being exported back to the power grid, contributing to green energy generation while reducing dependence on conventional sources of electricity.
Officials said the project is expected to result in significant savings in electricity costs and reduce reliance on peak-hour power demand. Besides lowering energy consumption from conventional sources, the solar plant will also help reduce carbon emissions and minimize the overall carbon footprint of the coaching depot.
The commissioning of the 345 kWp rooftop solar power plant is part of Northeast Frontier Railway's broader strategy to expand the use of renewable energy and develop eco-friendly railway infrastructure. NFR said it will continue to undertake similar initiatives to enhance energy efficiency and contribute to the national goal of building a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable future.
