While several fans admired her appearance, some social media users questioned whether the outfit was appropriate for an event centred around a religious celebration.

Another user questioned the choice of outfit, writing, “She really appear for ganapati celebration or for a ramp walk? Disha Patani?!”

However, Disha also received support from a section of social media users who felt her attire was not inappropriate for the occasion.

One user accused the critics of hypocrisy while defending Disha and wrote, “New India's New Cultural Heritage parameters. Self-appointed guardians of Indian culture are now triggered by Disha Patani's neckline, but have zero ‘Cultural Shock’ when it comes to the absolute chaos and vulgarity being normalized on the streets.”

Disha's backlash comes days after her industry colleague Kriti Sanon faced criticism over her outfit in a jewellery advertisement for Raksha Bandhan.

For the GIVA campaign, Kriti wore an off-white Indo-Western ensemble comprising a bralette-style blouse, cape and draped skirt.

The outfit sparked criticism on social media, with some users questioning whether the look was appropriate for a campaign centred around Raksha Bandhan and raising concerns over cultural representation.

The controversy reportedly led to the advertisement being taken down, further fuelling the debate surrounding women's clothing and the scrutiny faced by actresses in the name of culture.

Kriti, however, pushed back against the criticism and defended women's freedom to choose what they wear.

The two controversies have now sparked a wider social-media debate over women's fashion, cultural expectations and the policing of actresses' outfits during religious occasions and festivals.
