TIFF 2024 concludes its 49th edition by announcing 2024 award winners
Toronto/IBNS: Toronto International Film Festival 2024 concluded its 49th edition with its annual awards slate.
A total of 10 awards were handed out at the awards ceremony today, including jury-awarded prizes and the renowned People’s Choice Awards.
“As we conclude this year’s Festival and present these 10 awards today, I can’t wait to see the future awards and accolades that await your incredible films,” Cameron Bailey, CEO of TIFF has said.
PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD PRESENTED BY ROGERS
The People's Choice Midnight Madness Award went to The Substance, directed by Coralie Fargeat in the United Kingdom/USA/France.
The first runner-up in the category is Dead Talents Society, directed by John Hsu in Taiwan while the second runner-up is Friendship, directed by. Andrew DeYoung in the USA.
People’s Choice Documentary Award was bagged by The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal, directed by. Mike Downiei in Canada.
The first runner-up was Will & Harper, directed by Josh Greenbaum in the USA and the second runner-up was Your Tomorrow, directed by Ali Weinstein in Canada.
The People's Choice Award went to The Life of Chuck, directed by Mike Flanagan in the USA. The first runner-up in the category was Emilia Pérez, directed by Jacques Audiard in France/USA/Mexico while the second runner-up went to Anora, directed by Sean Baker in USA.
SHORT CUTS AWARDS
Being for Best International Film and Best Canadian Film, Short Cuts Awards would give two winning films with a bursary of $10,000 CAD.
Short Cuts Award for Best International Film:
Deck 5B, directed by Malin Ingrid Johansson in Sweden
Honourable Mention:
Quota, directed by Job Roggeveen, Joris Oprins, Marieke Blaauw in Netherlands
Short Cuts Award for Best Canadian Film:
Are You Scared To Be Yourself Because You Think That You Might Fail?, directed by Bec Pecaut in Canada
FIPRESCI AWARD
Dedicated to emerging filmmakers, the 2024 FIPRESCI Award's proud recipient was Mother Mother directed by K’naan Warsame in Somalia.
NETPAC AWARD
Promoting the Asian Pacific Cinema, recognizing films specifically from the Asian and Pacific regions, the NETPAC Award presented by the Network went to The Last of the Sea Women, directed by Sue Kim in USA
BEST CANADIAN DISCOVERY AWARD
Celebrating works of emerging filmmakers who contribute to enriching the Canadian film landscape, the Best Canadian Discovery Award is back this year after being on hiatus since 2019 with a new name and new criteria.
All first or second feature films in Official Selection by Canadian filmmakers were eligible for this award. The winner will receive a cash prize of $10,000.
Best Canadian Discovery Award:
Universal Language, directed by Matthew Rankin in Canada
Honorable Mention:
You Are Not Alone, directed by. Marie-Hélène Viens, and Philippe Lupien in Canada
BEST CANADIAN FEATURE FILM AWARD PRESENTED BY CANADA GOOSE
All Canadian feature films in Official Selection — excluding first or second features — will be considered for the award. The winning filmmaker will receive a $10,000 cash prize. The 2024 Best Canadian Feature Film Award is presented by Canada Goose.
Best Canadian Feature Film Award:

PLATFORM COMPETITION AWARD
With an award of $20,000 CAD, The Platform Award given to the best film in the competition selected by an in-person international jury is awarded to
They Will Be Dust, directed by Carlos Marques-Marcet in Spain, Italy, Switzerland
Honourable Mention:
Sylvia Chang in Daughter’s Daughter, directed by Huang Xi in Taiwan.
