The decision was taken by the state's security wing as part of a broader reassessment of VIP security arrangements. Ganguly's security had been upgraded from the "Y" category to the higher "Z" category in 2023.
Security review leads to downgrade
Under the earlier "Y" category cover, Ganguly was protected by three Special Branch personnel, while a similar number of police personnel were deployed at his residence in Kolkata's Behala area.
Following the upgrade to "Z" category security, the former cricketer was provided with a larger security detail comprising 8 to 10 police personnel.
Armed escorts also accompanied him during his movements within the state.
However, a recent security review concluded that the current threat perception does not justify the continuation of "Z" category protection.
What changes under the new arrangement
While Ganguly will continue to receive police protection, the extensive security apparatus associated with the "Z" category has been scaled down.
The revised arrangement is expected to reduce the number of personnel assigned to his security.
Dedicated personal security officers (PSOs), stationary guards at his residence and other components of the enhanced security cover have also reportedly been curtailed.
Officials stressed that the move does not leave the former India captain without protection and that security measures will remain in place in accordance with the latest assessment.
Part of wider VIP security restructuring
NDTV, quoting sources, indicated that the decision is not specific to Ganguly but forms part of a wider restructuring of VIP security deployment undertaken by the new state government.
The review aims to ensure that security resources are allocated based on an individual's current constitutional position, official responsibilities and updated threat perception rather than past roles or public stature.
According to officials, Ganguly's present profile does not warrant the higher level of protection associated with the "Z" category.

One of India's most celebrated cricketers, Ganguly, remains among West Bengal's most prominent public figures.
The former Indian captain also served as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and remains active in sports administration and public life.
The latest decision, however, reflects the government's position that VIP security cover should be periodically reviewed and aligned with prevailing security assessments rather than retained indefinitely.
