Rohit Sharma likely to lead India in England after Champions Trophy success: Reports

By IBNS
Mar 15, 2025..

Rohit Sharma is likely to lead the Indian team in the upcoming five-match Test series against England after India won the Champions Trophy in Dubai by beating New Zealand in the final.

Sharma's future as Test skipper remained in doubt after his side suffered a whitewash in the home series against New Zealand and then a poor run Australia.

Sharma's lack of runs with the willow even made him 'stand down' in the Sydney Test match, with a section of critics demanding his removal as skipper.

The Indian Express newspaper reported that Rohit has the backing of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and its selection panel to lead the team on another major tour.

“He has shown what he can do. Every stakeholder feels that he is the right candidate to lead the Indian side for the tour of England. Rohit too has expressed his eagerness to keep playing red-ball cricket,” the source told the newspaper.

Rohit Is Not Retiring At Present

Rohit Sharma silenced critics after winning the Champions Trophy in Dubai by beating New Zealand in the final on Sunday and ended all speculations about his retirement by saying he is not going to quit the 50-over format of the game at present.

India's next major 50-over event will be the ODI World Cup in 2027.

"I am not going to retire from this format," Sharma said during a post-match conference.

"Just to make sure no rumours are spread moving forward," he said.

Rohit Sharma led his side from the front and hammered a quick-fire 76 runs knock to provide India a strong start to the run chase.

It was the first time Sharma, known for his blistering knocks, scored a half-century in an ICC event final.
