AA Road, Gammon Bridge portion of Badarpurghat closed for 2 months, Tripura bound vehicles to take alternative routes
The Assam-Agartala National Highway at the portion of Gammon Bridge at Badarpurghat has been closed for 2 months from Wednesday (May 21) for repairing the bridge over the Barak River.
Official sources said that all vehicles will travel about 30 km more through all alternative routes for the Tripura -Silchar-Kalain-Guwahati Road till July 20th ,2025.
Earlier, on May 20(Tuesday) in a significant development aimed at ensuring the safety and longevity of crucial infrastructure, authorities announced the temporary closure of the Gammon Bridge at Badarpurghat starting May 21. The bridge, a vital link for commuters and transporters in the region, will undergo extensive repairing and re-strengthening work, necessitating the suspension of vehicular movement across it.
In light of the closure, all classes of vehicles traveling towards Sribhumi (Silchar), Hailakandi, and the adjoining states including Tripura will be diverted via the Kalain-Silchar road. This strategic re-routing is expected to streamline traffic and maintain connectivity, albeit with certain restrictions to safeguard the condition of the alternative route.
Official sources added that to ensure the safety and stability of the Kalain-Silchar road, the movement of all types of loaded vehicles with a gross total laden weight exceeding 40 tons has been strictly prohibited. This restriction is being enforced with immediate effect and will remain in place until further notice, in order to prevent undue stress on the alternate route and avoid any potential mishaps.
While the authorities regret the inconvenience caused to the public and transport operators, they have emphasized that the move is essential for long-term infrastructural stability and the safety of commuters. The repair of the Gammon Bridge is a crucial undertaking, and the cooperation of the public is earnestly sought during this period of disruption.
The notification was issued by K.B. Nath, Executive Engineer of PWRD Borkhola & Katigorah Territorial Road Division of Assam, urging all concerned to adhere strictly to the new traffic regulations and support the ongoing infrastructure upgrade.
