In a significant boost to medical education in Tripura, Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) has received approval for an increase of 58 postgraduate (MD/MS) seats for the academic year 2026-27, taking the total number of seats from 95 to 153.

The expansion covers 16 specialized disciplines and is expected to create greater opportunities for aspiring medical students while further strengthening the state’s medical education and healthcare infrastructure.

According to the discipline-wise seat allocation issued on November 6, 2026, the increase has been approved through a letter and public notice of the National Medical Commission (NMC).

Among the major additions, five seats each have been approved in MD Anaesthesiology, MD Anatomy, MS Ophthalmology, MD Physiology and MD Paediatrics. Four additional seats each have been sanctioned in MD Dermatology, MD Forensic Medicine, MS Obstetrics and Gynaecology, MD Pathology and MD Community Medicine. Three seats have been added in MD Biochemistry, while two additional seats have been approved in MS ENT.

The expansion also includes new postgraduate seats in MD Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, which previously had no seats at the college.

With the latest enhancement, AGMC will have 153 postgraduate seats across 22 MD/MS disciplines, marking a substantial improvement in the state’s capacity for advanced medical education.

Expressing delight over the development, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha said that the expansion would open up greater opportunities for Tripura’s youth and further strengthen the state’s medical education and healthcare ecosystem.

“Gratitude was also expressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda for their continued support in strengthening medical education and healthcare infrastructure in Tripura,” said Dr Saha.

The expansion is being viewed as an important step towards building a stronger medical education system and ensuring a healthier Tripura in the years ahead.
