Assam police seize large quantities of contraband cough syrup before smuggle to Agartala, two arrested
Based on secret information, the Assam police posted at Churaibari check post has achieved major success by seizing a Agartala bound large consignment of contraband items and busting a drug smuggling racket with arrest of two peddlers with a huge consignment of banned cough syrups on Saturday.
Sources said that the operation was carried out by police personnel at the Churaibari watch post in Sribhumi district of Assam, just adjacent to Tripura check post under North Tripura district.
Acting on specific inputs, a six-wheeler container truck bearing registration number AS25-FC-6316, which was traveling from Guwahati to Agartala, was intercepted during routine Naka checking at the Tripura-Assam border on Saturday.
During the search, police discovered two large wooden boxes cleverly concealed under parcels labeled as Blue Dart courier consignments. Upon opening the boxes, officers recovered 12 cartons containing a total of 3,600 bottles of the contraband cough syrup ‘Eskuf’.
The two drivers of the vehicle were immediately detained. They have been identified as Mofizul Islam (30), a resident of Hajo in Assam, and Sunti Ali (40), from Nagaon district of Assam. During preliminary interrogation, they claimed that the consignment was meant to be delivered to the Lichu Bagan area in Agartala.
However, inconsistencies in their statements have raised further suspicion, and police believe the duo may have prior links with the smuggling network.
A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and an investigation is underway. The accused are expected to be produced before the CJM court on Sunday. Meanwhile, Assam Police has intensified efforts to identify and apprehend other members involved in the smuggling racket.
