Bharat Ratna Sangha building demolished after one week of notice

After the sub divisional administration of Sadar  on July 8th served a notice on Bharat Ratna Club, one of the largest social clubs and Durga Puja organizers in Agartala city and gave one week deadline to remove the building erected on government land, failing which it would be demolished by the authorities, just passing of seven days deadline, the West Tripura district administration with a jumbo team including security forces  demolished the entire structure with bulldozers.

Two months ago, Bharat Ratna Club came to limelight after its incumbent secretary was shot dead at point blank range on the outskirts of the city allegedly by negotiation mafias.

In the early morning  on Wednesday, the district administration led by DM(West) Dr Vishal Kumar moved with bulldozers and completed the task within hours. This for the first time the government has demolished a club building constructed on government land.

Famous for organizing  big budget  Durga puja, the club landed into a big controversy following the recent murder of its secretary Durga Prassanna Deb alias Viky. However, the club was in a controversy for long for controlling the tender negotiation in the office of the Central PWD located in the area. The area witnessed similar murder or other crimes also earlier over tender negotiations.

During demolition, DM , Dr Vishal Kumar speaking with media persons said that strict action will be taken against all those involved in anti social activities and the government will not allow any construction or occupancy in government ‘Khas’ land.  The demolition was carried out following a notice issued to the club on July 8, instructing them to remove the illegal structures within one week. When the club failed to comply by the July 15 deadline, the district administration took swift action.

Dr. Vishal Kumar, the District Magistrate and Collector of West Tripura, led the raid, accompanied by a team of officials, police, CRPF, and fire services. The demolition process in presence of a large number of police officials, CRPF, TSR and firefighters was carried out using multiple excavators. The raids began in the early hours of the morning, ensuring the demolition was completed efficiently and without any incident.

Dr. Kumar emphasized that the club was built on government land, and that the demolition was part of a broader initiative to uphold the Chief Ministers & government’s policy of zero tolerance against crime. He stated, "No organization or individual involved in smuggling, peddling, land mafia activities, or interference in government tender negotiations will be spared. Strict action will be taken against all those involved." The Bharat Ratna Sangha had long been under scrutiny for its alleged involvement in anti-social activities. Dr. Kumar noted that several members, both new and old, are currently incarcerated on various criminal charges.

The decision to demolish the club was taken in accordance with the law and with plans to construct a primary health care center on the vacated land, which is expected to benefit the local community significantly.

Dr. Kumar also issued a stern warning to other clubs involved in illegal activities, stating that similar actions would be taken against any organization capturing government land. The demolition of Bharat Ratna Sangha serves as a strong message reinforcing the government's commitment to law and order.
