City unites on two wheels: Agartala hosts vibrant cycle rally promoting fitness and sustainability

In a spirited show of unity, fitness, and environmental consciousness, Agartala witnessed a vibrant cycle rally on Sunday morning as part of the “Sundays on Cycle” initiative. Organized by the Tripura State Chapter under Youth Affairs in collaboration with the Sports Authority of India (SAI), Fit India Movement, and the Agartala Cycloholics Foundation, the event attracted cyclists from diverse backgrounds—students, professionals, government officials, and fitness enthusiasts alike.

The event was officially flagged off by Dr. Pradip Kumar Chakraborty, Secretary, Youth Affairs and Sports Department. He was joined by S.B. Nath, Director of Youth Affairs and Sports; Arindam Gagoi, In-Charge of SAI; Dr. Surya Kanta Paul, High Performance Director of Khelo India; and Assistant Director Bharath Nigam, who also cycled with his son, spreading the message of active family participation.

Adding to the inclusive spirit of the rally, Mou Datta, a teacher from Shishu Bihar School, participated as one of the female cyclists, breaking stereotypes and inspiring many. Several other notable riders included Chandan Bhowmik, a 65-year-old cycling enthusiast; Ayan Debbarma, Plaban Biswas, and Lab Charan Das, bank personnel who actively pedalled across the city.

Speaking at the occasion, Dr. Chakraborty emphasized the need for making Cycling Sundays a regular initiative to encourage not only fitness but also eco-friendly transportation. Director S.B. Nath, who himself rode alongside participants, highlighted the utility of cycling in daily life—be it for recreation, health, or commuting.

Gopesh Debnath, the Bicycle Mayor of Agartala and a well-known cycling activist, described the event as a “unique gathering where hierarchy disappeared.” He added, “It was heartwarming to see people from all walks of life—teachers, bankers, students, and even sports officials—ride together, sharing a powerful message that the bicycle knows no status. It’s a unifier.”

The rally, part of the Fit India and Khelo India missions, also championed the slogans #PollutionKaSolution and #PedalToFitness, echoing the need for sustainable practices in daily urban life.

With growing participation and public interest, such initiatives are poised to become a regular fixture in Agartala’s fitness and green living calendar.
