Congress staged protest over ‘inhuman treatment’ to Indian deportees from U.S.
The opposition Congress as part of their nationwide protest has organized a mass protest rally in Agartala on Friday against ‘inhuman treatment’ to Indian deportees from the U.S.
Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) staged a strong protest in front of Congress Bhavan, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the alleged inhumane treatment of Indian citizens deported from the United States.
The protesters condemned the deportation process, which involved Indian nationals being sent back in handcuffs and chains, calling it a violation of human rights under the Geneva Convention.
While the handcuffed pictures of deported Indians did not sit well with some Congress leaders, the Minister of External Affairs, S Jaishankar, termed it as standard operating procedure (SOP) in the US.
This seems to be a matter of difference in how the two countries, India and the US, approach handcuffing.
In the US, the provisions for handcuffing the lawfully arrested are different from what is practiced in India which may have escalated the uproar.
After the protest, senior Congress leader and MLA Sudip Roy Barman accused the Modi-led central government of failing to protect the dignity and rights of Indian citizens abroad and called for immediate diplomatic intervention to prevent such incidents in the future.
The protest saw a large turnout of party workers holding placards and chanting slogans against the central government’s failure to address the issue.
The TPCC has vowed to continue its agitation until the Modi government takes responsibility for the humiliation faced by Indian citizens abroad and ensures proper diplomatic action to prevent such occurrences in the future.
Questioning the use of a military plane to deport undocumented Indians from the U.S., the Congress has organized protests on Friday across the country.
“We strongly oppose both the inhuman treatment of our citizens and the government’s weak stance on this issue,” said Sudip and added that Congress workers across the country condemned.
