Continuous heavy rainfall over the past two to three days has caused the Khowai River to swell significantly, triggering flood-like conditions in several low-lying areas of Teliamura. Rising water levels have inundated houses in multiple wards under the Teliamura Municipal Council, prompting the administration to open seven relief camps for affected residents on Wednesday.
Official sources said that floodwaters have entered several homes in Shantinagar under Ward No. 6, Dashamighat in Wards 4 and 5, and Netaji Nagar in Ward No. 9 of the municipal area. Similar flooding has also been reported from riverside localities in Trishabari, Moharcherra and Kalyanpur under the Gram Panchayat areas.
Residents have begun shifting household belongings, essential items and valuables to safer locations as concerns mount over the possibility of further flooding if the rain continues. The steadily rising river level has heightened anxiety among people living along the riverbanks.
Teliamura Municipal Council Chairman Rupak Sarkar and Deputy CEO Pradip Kumar Sarkar visited the affected areas, interacted with residents and reviewed the prevailing situation.
The Teliamura Sub-Divisional Administration has kept its disaster response teams, along with the Fire and Emergency Services Department, on high alert to deal with any worsening flood situation. Necessary arrangements have been made to ensure prompt rescue and relief operations if required.
Chairman Rupak Sarkar said that seven relief camps have already been opened within the municipal area to provide safe shelter to flood-affected residents. In addition, another relief camp has been set up at Moharcherra School for people from the surrounding Gram Panchayat areas. He said affected families would be shifted to these shelters whenever necessary, where food, safe drinking water and other essential services have been arranged.
Meanwhile, the administration has been using public address systems to alert residents living along the riverbanks, urging them to move to safer locations and take shelter in relief camps without delay. Officials are also maintaining round-the-clock monitoring of the flood situation.
Teliamura Sub-Divisional Magistrate Apurba Krishna Chakraborty said the administration is giving the highest priority to protecting the lives and property of people in flood-affected areas. He appealed to residents of vulnerable riverside locations not to take unnecessary risks and to immediately move to the nearest shelter or relief camp while strictly following official advisories.
As of the latest reports, around 10 to 15 families from the flood-hit Dashamighat area of Ward No. 4 have already taken shelter at the relief camp set up at Shishu Malancha School. The administration has arranged food, safe drinking water and other essential supplies for them.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rainfall over the coming days, raising fears that the Khowai River's water level may rise further and worsen the flood situation. Authorities said they are fully prepared to respond to any emergency and have urged the public to remain alert while avoiding panic.
