Dowry death: Husband, in-laws sentenced to 10 yrs of imprisonment

After a pro-long hearing of the sensational dowry death of Juma Debnath of Ranirbazar, a local court in Agartala on Monday sentenced to ten years of rigorous imprisonment to her husband and her father and mother in-laws.

Giving details of the case, additional public prosecutor (PP) advocate Arindam Deb said on the ill-fated night of March 26, 2014, one housewife Juma Debnath of Koroimura area of Ranirbazar committed suicide due to seven years long torture on her by her husband and other in-laws for dowry.

After the incident, an FIR was filed at Jirania police station and after proper investigation the then police Sub-Inspector Jayanta Malakar filed the charge-sheet against her husband  Ratan Debnath, father-in-law Manindra Debnath and mother-in-law Malaka Debnath.

After nine years of trial and recording of witnesses, the additional district and session judge of the West Tripura district sentenced all three accused for dowry death, said advocate Deb and added that all accused will rigorous imprisonment of 10 years under section 304(B) of IPC  and three years of jail under section 498 (A). The court also imposed a fine of Rs. 5000 to each accused under the same section and if they are unable to pay the fine amount, they will suffer two more months of rigorous imprisonment.
