The Institution of Engineers (India), Tripura State Centre, in association with the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), successfully organized a seminar on “EV Charging – DISCOM Perspective” to mark the observance of Energy Conservation Day on 12 December 2025 at the TSECL Conference Hall, Agartala.

The programme was presided over by Engineer Paramananda Sarkar Banerjee, FIE, Chairman of IE(I), Tripura State Centre. In his welcome address, he set the tone for the seminar by emphasizing the rapid evolution of India’s electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem and the critical role that power systems and distribution utilities must play in enabling a seamless transition. He highlighted how the shift toward e-mobility is not merely a transportation reform but a transformative opportunity for strengthening grid resilience, adopting smarter technologies, and promoting sustainable energy practices across the state.

The keynote address was delivered by Er. Biswajit Basu, Managing Director, TSECL, who graced the event as Guest of Honour. Drawing on current statistics and national trends, he presented a comprehensive overview of the present status of EV penetration in Tripura and India. Backed by data-driven insights, he elaborated on the growing demand for charging infrastructure, the operational challenges faced by DISCOMs, and the evolving policy frameworks shaping EV deployment. He also outlined key regulatory provisions and government incentives aimed at accelerating EV adoption, while underlining TSECL’s strategic alignment with these national objectives.

A detailed technical presentation followed by Prof. (Dr.) Priyanath Das, FIE, Professor of Electrical Engineering at NIT Agartala and Honorary Secretary of IE(I) Tripura State Centre. Prof. Das presented a scholarly analysis on “Impact of EV Charging Station Placement in Radial Distribution Networks” and introduced a novel EV Allocation Index-Based Solution. His talk addressed critical engineering considerations such as voltage stability, network loading, and optimal charger placement, providing valuable insights for planners and utility engineers preparing for large-scale EV integration.

Further enriching the technical discourse, Er. Pradip Sutradhar, Additional General Manager, Electrical Circle–I, TSECL, discussed the fundamentals of EV behavior within power systems. His session clarified how EV charging impacts demand profiles, feeder design, and overall load management—knowledge essential for both policymakers and engineers working on distribution network upgrades.

The seminar also featured an important discussion by Swapan Debbarma, General Manager (Tech), TSECL, who elaborated on the ongoing EV-related initiatives currently being implemented in Agartala. He detailed the progress of collaborative efforts with government agencies to streamline project execution. His presentation offered participants a ground-level view of Tripura’s roadmap toward a more electrified transportation future.

The event concluded with a formal Vote of Thanks delivered by Er. Mita Saha, MIE, Additional General Manager, TSECL, who acknowledged the contributions of all dignitaries, speakers, members, and participants. She emphasized that the insights shared during the seminar will support Tripura’s continued progress in sustainable energy and electric mobility.

The seminar reaffirmed the commitment of IE(I) Tripura State Centre and TSECL to advancing awareness, technology adoption, and policy implementation in the pursuit of a greener and more energy-efficient future.
