Heavy Monsoon rain affects normal life across Tripura, flood like situation in Agartala

As incessant Monsoon rainfalls struck Tripura since Monday early morning, all low-lying areas of Agartala flooded with rain water and disturbed normal life.

Incessant rain across Tripura caused by the low pressure area over South Bangladesh and neighbourhood persists over the same region on Monday and associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 5.8 km above mean sea level, said India Meteorological department (IMD), Agartala station.

The IMD said that under the influence of the above system isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur over Tripura for next two days and has also  issued ‘Orange’ for Monday and ‘Yellow’ warning for Tuesday.

While, the heavy downpour since Monday morning major parts of the city are marooned due heavy rains.  All the low-lying areas of Agartala have been partially and fully submerged with rain water and traffic movements hit road-blocks during the past few hours.

Since July, Monsoon rain hit Tripura with moderate winds and incessant rain, but since Monday morning the incessant rain across Agartala severely affected the normal life and major parts of the city including its low-lying suburb areas have also submerged with rain water.

Sources said that AMC failed to perform its duties by putting in place pumps for removing rain water and as a result of the failure major parts of the city is under rain water.

With the incessant Monsoon rain for the entire day all the low-lying areas of Agartala have been partially and fully submerged with rain water and traffic movements hit road-blocks.

The worst is, massive traffic jams have blockaded every corner of Agartala city due to submerged roads with rain water, pathetic conditions of sewerage systems of Agartala and for special negligence of traffic police and their mismanagement. Later, in the evening flood water started receding from the city as all pumps of AMC started working in full force.

Reports from other parts of the state said, the monsoon with incessant rains also disturbed the normal life and cyclonic storm with heavy rain wreak havoc across Golaghati Bazar under Sepahijala district and few shops and temple destroyed in the cyclonic storm. The National Highway portion at Charilam has also submerged into rain water for hours and badly disturbed the traffic movements through Agartala-Sabroom route and hundreds of vehicles stranded for hours on both sides of the road.

Meanwhile, there are reports of moderate damages to crops and destruction of electric lines due to incessant rains in several parts of the state. The power supply in and around Agartala has also been disturbed due to incessant rains.

MET department sources said, rain and heavy and moderate Monsoon rain may occur in more areas of Tripura during next 24 hours. The monsoon rains for the entire day have further cooled the air in the state capital with maximum temperatures rising to 26.8 degrees Celsius, which is minus 6 degree Celsius from normal temperature and minimum temperature was recorded at 25.2 degrees Celsius on Monday.

The rain gauges at the Regional Weather Station measured 56 mm of rain in Agartala airport in the last 12 hours, but city areas received more rainfall during the past few hours, said IMD’s Agartala station.

IMD added that continuous rain would cross the present parameter after night 8.30 PM counting on the rain gauge meter.
