Heavy rainfall across Tripura, one dead, 106 houses damaged, flood in river Howrah, CM reviewed situation

Under the influence deep depression in Bay of Bengal, the heavy rainfall lashed major parts of Tripura, worsening the flood situation in several places, even as the MET department forecast more downpours in the state over the next five days and issued ‘red’, ‘orange’ and ‘yellow’ warning with heavy rainfall prediction across the state.
As incessant Monsoon rainfall struck Tripura since Wednesday morning and low-lying areas and areas adjacent to many rivers flooded with rain water and disturbed normal life. The worst flood situation has been reported from West Tripura and Khowai districts.
During incessant rain for past 48 hours, one person drowned in Jirania subdivision and so far, a total of 106 houses were damaged in different parts of the state, said Pandey and added that so far, 4 relief camps are operations in West Tripura and Khowai districts, where 57 families with 207 persons were sheltered.
The fresh flood at the adjoining areas of rivers Howrah in Agartala and other parts of the West Tripura district after incessant rain during the last 48 hours under the influence of strengthening of Monsoon in Tripura, rendered many families homeless in all low lying areas.
Addressing a press conference Revenue secretary, Brijesh Pandey said that Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha reviewed the current weather situation in the state with the Chief Secretary and other concerned officials on Friday and advised to take all measures to mitigate the suffering of common people with relief and rescue operations.
He said that India Meteorological Department (IMD) report on Friday at 1 PM, the depression over Bangladesh moved north-northeast wards over Bangladesh about 110 km northwest of Dhaka and it is very likely to continue to move nearly north-northeast wards and weaken during the next 12-hours.
“Under its influence, heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rainfall and squally, gusty winds is very likely to occur. IMD has issued ‘Red’ warning on Friday up to 8.30 AM of 31st May, 2025 over North Tripura and Unakoti districts and remaining districts are given ‘Orange’ warnings,” said Pandey.
He said that immediately after getting the weather report, the state government has issued advisories to the DMs and key line departments on May 28 for taking immediate preparedness and response measures and now, NDRF and SDRF are on standby in all districts.
Trained volunteers are also on standby with equipment for necessary rescue and relief operations.
Apart from the death of one person in Jirania subdivision, a total of 106 houses were damaged in different parts of the state, said Pandey and added that so far 207 persons were sheltered in relief camps.
He said that due to fallen trees and broken electric poles, road access was disrupted in multiple locations including Panisagar, Longtharai Valley, Jampuijala, Jirania, Mohanpur, Sadar, Karbook and Sabroom subdivisions and all have been cleared with the support of SDRF, TSR jawans, Forest department and community volunteers.
Pandey said that flood water in river Howrah is moving above a critical level of 10 meters and state emergency operation is closely monitoring real-time water levels in all rivers of the state.
He said that West Tripura district administration with sufficient SDRF teams, civil volunteers and boats are continuing their emergency rescue operations.
He requested the citizens to remain indoors during heavy rainfall and squally winds and should avoid venturing near rivers and low-lying areas.
It may be recalled here that amidst India Meteorological Department (IMD) warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rainfall and squally, gusty winds over Tripura during May 28 to May 31st, 2025 and subsequent, state government’s advisories to all district magistrates, heavy rain wreaks havoc across Tripura since past three days under the influence of deep depression over Northwest Bay of Bengal.
IMD, Agartala station highlighting current weather condition said that “the depression over Bangladesh moved north-northeast wards with a speed of 18 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centred at 0830 hours IST of today, the 30th May 2025 over Bangladesh near latitude 24.4°N and longitude 89.6°E, about 40 km west-northwest of Tangail (Bangladesh), 110 km northwest of Dhaka (Bangladesh), 140 km north of Berhampore (India) and 260 km west-southwest of Shillong (India). It is very likely to continue to move nearly north-northeast wards and weaken into a well-marked low pressure area during the next 12 hours.” Under its influence, Heavy to Very Heavy rainfall with Isolated Extremely Heavy Rainfall and Squally/Gusty winds is very likely to occur over the districts of Tripura, added IMD.
Incessant rain across Agartala caused by deep depression in Bay of Bengal, affected normal life since Wednesday evening and on Thursday evening, the heavy rainfall all the low-lying areas of Agartala have been partially submerged with rain water and traffic movements hit road-blocks during the past two days.
Since May 28, Monsoon rain hit Tripura with moderate winds and incessant rain, but since Thursday morning the incessant rain across Agartala severely affected the normal life and major parts of the city including its low-lying suburb areas have also submerged with rain water.
Reports from other parts of the state said, the Monsoon with incessant rains also disturbed the normal life.
