Incessant rainfall disturb normal life in Tripura, milder winter from December 2023 to February 2024: predicts IMD

The incessant rains with cold waves across the state since early hours of Thursday disturb the normal life, which downed the mercury with movement of cold waves and increased the feelings of winter.

Sudden, torrential rain with cold waves occurred across Tripura have cooled the air with light and moderate rains in parts of Dhalai, Khowai, Sepahijala and West Tripura districts.

The Meteorological Department (IMD) office has forecast for Friday a partly cloudy sky, maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 25 degree and 19 degree Celsius respectively.

The showers have further cooled the air in the state capital with maximum temperatures plunging to near 22 degrees Celsius and minimum temperature recorded at 19 degrees Celsius.

Several areas in the state capital city Agartala, especially parts of HGB Road, Shakuntala Road and Orient Chowmuhani, were waterlogged and the municipality removed flood water from inundated areas with pumps.

Reports from other parts of the state said, the incessant rains also disturbed the normal life. MET department sources said, rain and heavy rain to continue in more areas of Tripura during next 24 hours.

With the continuous rain since early hours of Thursday all the low-lying areas of Agartala have been partially submerged with rain water and very few traffic movements  witnessed across Agartala due to incessant rain.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a milder winter for the country from December 2023 to February 2024.

The forecast indicates that the intensity and frequency of cold waves are expected to be lower than usual in the majority of north, northwest, central, east, and northeast India.

Scientists attribute this deviation from normal winter conditions to below-average western disturbances, reducing the influx of colder winds from snowclad regions to parts of northwest and central India.

This weather pattern, responsible for cooler temperatures, is anticipated to persist throughout the season.

The Meteorological Department had similarly projected warmer winters in 2022, and maximum and minimum temperatures across most parts of the country remained slightly higher.

Over the past few months, several regions in the country have experienced temperatures above the normal range. In a statement, the IMD said that during the upcoming winter season (December 2023 to February 2024), above normal maximum temperatures are likely over most parts of the country except some areas over central and northwest India where normal to below normal maximum temperatures are likely.

IMD added that the monthly maximum temperatures for December 2023 are likely to be above normal over most parts of the country except some areas of central India and north India where normal maximum temperatures are likely.

The IMD also predicted that below-normal cold wave days are expected over most parts of northwest, central, east, and northeast India during the winter season.
