India’s first 120 MW CCGT Power plant to rise in Tripura’s Rokhia
Tripura is on the verge of ushering in a new era of power generation with the upcoming installation of a 120 MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power plant at Rokhia. Initiated by Tripura Power Generation Limited (TPGL), this will be the first-ever project of its kind in India, marking a historic milestone in the country’s power sector.
Funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the project aims to enhance electricity generation without additional fuel gas consumption, utilizing environmentally friendly technology to ensure affordable power supply to consumers.
Through global e-tendering, Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) emerged as the lowest bidder, quoting INR 1,119.30 crore (excluding GST). TPGL and MEIL have already signed a contract for the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) of the project. The plant will feature a configuration of two Gas Turbines, two Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs), and one Steam Turbine (2GT+2HRSG+1ST).
The project will use Siemens Energy AB’s state-of-the-art SGT-800 gas turbines, each with a capacity of 57 MW under ISO conditions. Known for their exceptional efficiency and advanced start-stop characteristics, these turbines will be installed for the very first time in any power plant in India. MEIL will execute the project in collaboration with Siemens.
On August 11, a six-member delegation from MEIL and Siemens visited the Rokhia project site, accompanied by the project proponents and TPGL corporate officials. The following day, the Siemens team met TPGL Managing Director Biswajit Basu in Agartala. During the meeting, Siemens representatives assured that the SGT-800 turbines would play a crucial role in meeting both the base and peak load requirements of Tripura.
Once operational, the Rokhia CCGT power plant will not only move Tripura closer to self-reliance in power generation but will also set a groundbreaking precedent in India’s power technology landscape.
