Legal Metrology raids in renowned jewellery shops in Agartala, seized weight machines
In a routine exercise, the Legal Metrology department of Tripura raided many jewellery shops in Agartala on Thursday and found discrepancies in their weights and measures machines.
A team of the Legal Metrology department in their day-long raids in many renowned jewellery shops, found the weight machines in two jewellery shops are unable to give corrected readings over the weights of jewellery items.
The enforcement team under the Tripura Legal Metrology (Enforcement), Rules, 2011. (With Amendment Rules, 2015) have also seized a few weight machines from two jewelers.
Giving details, Souvik Burdhan, Inspector of Legal Metrology department said that in a routine exercise by the department, they conducted enforcement raids in some jewellery shops in the capital city and found that few weight and measure machines are not providing corrected reading. Then, they seized a few machines from two jewellery shops and provided them opportunities to collect correct reading machines from the department.
He said that seized weight machines are not showing standard weight as per the norms of the department and they machines have to calibrate from the department, where the enforcement noticed only marginal error in the weight jewellery measuring about 15 to 50 milligrams.
Burdhan said that jewellery owners were directed to collect their seized machines through proper procedure of the department after standardization of the weight.
