Police from Madhupur police station under Sepahijala district on Sunday took murder accused Nayan Namo to the crime scene as part of their investigation into the killing of his sister-in-law, Sujita Das during the Kamalasagar Bhadra Mela. A forensic team also visited the spot to reconstruct the sequence of events.
According to police, Nayan Namo was arrested late on the night of the incident from Hapania Hospital after a case was registered against him and his father, Sanjit Namo, based on a complaint lodged by the victim's family. The complaint was filed by Sujita Das' mother, Gouri Das, at Madhupur police station.
Police said the accused was taken to the spot where investigators sought to reconstruct the incident and determine how the alleged attack was carried out and what weapon was used. The forensic team assisted in collecting evidence from the scene.
According to the allegations made during the investigation, Sujita Das, a married woman from the ONGC First Gate area and mother of a daughter, had been in a relationship with Pritam Namo, who was also married and has a son. It is alleged that Pritam had been living separately from his family for nearly three and a half years and was residing with Sujita Das, leading to prolonged disputes within the family despite several attempts at reconciliation.
On the day of the incident, Pritam and Sujita reportedly visited the Kamalasagar Bhadra Mela, where Sanjit Namo and his younger son, Nayan Namo, were running a stall. According to the allegations, an altercation broke out after Pritam was confronted by his father. During the ensuing scuffle, Nayan Namo allegedly intervened. It is further alleged that Sujita attempted to join the confrontation, following which Nayan allegedly picked up a knife from the fairground and stabbed her in the neck.
Sujita Das collapsed with severe injuries near Kasba Eco Park and was first taken to Madhupur Primary Health Centre before being referred to GBP Hospital in Agartala, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Following the incident, Madhupur police station arrested Nayan Namo and launched an investigation. On Sunday, he was produced before the Bishalgarh Sub-Divisional Court, where the investigating officer sought his police remand for further interrogation.
Police said the investigation is continuing, and all aspects of the case, including the circumstances leading to the fatal assault and the roles of the accused, are being examined. The allegations remain subject to investigation, and the court will determine the merits of the case.
