National Law University, Tripura celebrates Human Rights Day

The  National Law University, Tripura (NLUT) celebrated the 75th Human Rights Day on Sunday , which marks the diamond jubilee of Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

In order to commemorate this day, the Center of Northeast Studies and Policy Research (CNSPR), under the aegis of NLU Tripura has organised a programme titled "Human Rights Discourse on Human Rights Issues in North-Eastern Region: Remedies within the Contours of Indian Constitution".

As the Chief Guest, Justice Mr. S.G. Chattopadhyay, Former Judge, High Court of Tripura, recounted plethora of human rights issues affecting the northeastern region, such as child marriage which needs to be curbed as a widespread threat to basic human rights of the children. He advocated for the pressing need of human rights education in all public and private institutions, for all classes of professionals including civil servants, medical professionals, engineers and others.

Mr.Purushottam Roy Burman, Senior Advocate of High Court of Tripura, who was a chief speaker of the programme called for attention to the critical human rights concerns of the prisoners, minority groups, and the people living near the international borders in the north eastern region.

Prof. Yogesh Pratap Singh, the founding Vice Chancellor of NLU Tripura elaborately discussed the future plans of the university. He revisited the Constitutional Assembly Debates and referred to Dr. B. R. Ambedkar’s vision for human rights and inclusive Indian society. Prof. Singh also ushered the idea of practicing human values which leads to the culmination and enjoyment of true human rights.

At the end of the programme, students of NLU Tripura performed a Live Skit on the rights of the endangered tribes in the state of Tripura. Dr. Dipikanta Chakraborty, Convener of the programme assured the audience about the research centre’s commitment on becoming a leading academic voice of human rights victims in the north-eastern region.
