Opposition CPI (M) team reach bulldozer affected people, assured justice

Encouraged by the recent verdict of the apex court putting a break in Bulldozer, the CPI(M) is trying to reach out to the people who’s properties were demolished using the machine.

Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Jitendra Chaudhury along with a team of MLAs visited the Border Gol Chakkar area in Agartala on Sunday where several families were recently evicted from government-owned land. The CPI(M) legislative team interacted with the affected residents and assessed the situation on the ground.

The visit follows a recent demolition drive in which the homes of people residing on government-owned land in the Border Gol Chakkar area were razed using bulldozers. The eviction which reportedly carried out without any rehabilitation plan has left many families homeless even forcing them to live under the open sky.

While, speaking with the media persons Chaudhury expressed concern over the government sponsored action with the displaced families. He stated that many of the affected residents had been living in the area for the past 40-50 years with all valid documents proving their residence. “Issuing a notice of just 15-20 days before demolishing their homes is both unjust and inhumane,” he said and added that the sudden eviction had caused immense hardship to the people.

Chaudhury also pointed out that the eviction drive might have violated legal norms, referencing a Supreme Court ruling that mandates due process before such actions. He emphasized that the officials involved in this demolition, who seemingly disregarded legal protocols, could be held accountable in the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, during his visit the displaced families handed over a memorandum to Chaudhury with two key demands including immediate rehabilitation through the construction of homes on government land and the provision of stable income sources for the affected families.

Chaudhury also urged Ramnagar MLA and Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Dipak Majumder along with the state government to address the issue promptly. Chaudhury assured the displaced families that he would bring the matter to the attention of the Chief Minister in an effort to find a swift resolution.
