In a massive joint operation on Thursday morning, police and security forces destroyed more than one lakh cannabis (ganja) plants spread across 45 to 50 gardens in different interior areas of Sepahijala district, with an estimated market value of several crores of rupees.
According to police sources, a joint team comprising personnel from the Tripura Police, Tripura State Rifles (TSR), and CRPF, led by senior district officials, launched the anti-drug drive in remote villages including Bar Kochi and Belbari under Bangshibari ADC, as well as several areas near the Indo-Bangla border.
Security forces trekked through hilly and forested terrain to locate and destroy the illegal cannabis plantations one after another. Local farmers allegedly involved in the cultivation were seen fleeing or watching the operation from nearby jungles.
During the drive, the police successfully destroyed more than one lakh cannabis plants. SDPO (Bishalgarh) Vikash Senti stated that many more such illegal ganja gardens have been identified in the district’s interior areas, and similar operations will continue in the coming days.
