In compliance with the Supreme Court’s verdict on the protection and birth control of stray dogs, the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to implement necessary measures across the city.

An important meeting in this regard was held on Thursday at the conference hall of the AMC in the presence of Mayor Dipak Majumder, Municipal Commissioner Saju Vaheed, officials of the Animal Resources Development Department, and several corporators.

Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Mayor Dipak Majumder said that the AMC has decided to initiate steps to shift stray dogs to shelter homes, where proper care, maintenance, food, water, and other necessary arrangements will be ensured. He also stated that massive awareness campaigns on stray dog management will be carried out in every ward under the corporation.

According to an assessment, there are approximately 1,200 stray dogs in Agartala city. The Mayor said that in accordance with the Supreme Court’s directive, the AMC will take steps not only for the protection of stray dogs but also to control their birth rate through appropriate measures.

It may be mentioned that incidents of people being injured due to stray dog bites are frequently reported. In view of this, the Supreme Court has ruled that stray dogs should not be kept on the streets and has also set a timeframe for implementing the directive. Following the verdict, arrangements are being initiated in various states to relocate stray dogs to shelter homes.

Keeping this in mind, Agartala city has taken proactive steps to address the issue, the Mayor added.
