Storm in Tripura politics over alleged threat, abusing call by BJP MLA Tofazzal Hossain to a police officer
Fresh controversy has gripped Tripura after BJP MLA Tofazzal Hossain of Boxanagar under Sepahijala district was accused of threatening and verbally abusing a police officer, with a purported audio clip of the incident circulating widely on social media.
The allegations relate to a phone conversation with the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kalamchowra police station of the district. The recording, now viral, is said to feature the legislator using objectionable language and issuing threats to a police officer.
After the viral audio clip, the opposition CPI(M) and Tipra Motha Party (TMP), an ally in the state’s ruling coalition demanded immediate strict action against accused MLA.
Police sources claim the MLA attempted to exert pressure on the officer to act in favor of a suspected offender. The conversation reportedly includes warnings and derogatory remarks, raising concerns over misuse of political influence.
Tensions escalated after law enforcement authorities reportedly began legal proceedings in connection with the matter. Officials from Kalamchoura police station have accused the MLA of interfering in police functioning and attempting to intimidate the officer, even threatening to implicate him in false cases if demands were ignored.
The police have also sought intervention from senior state authorities, including Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha and DGP, Anurag Dhankar, urging strict action. Internal communications have flagged the issue of political interference in policing.
Meanwhile, additional allegations have surfaced against the MLA, including claims of disrupting polling activities in the Golaghati constituency during ADC elections. There are also accusations of involvement in unauthorized construction on government land.
In the audio clip, the MLA is allegedly heard accusing the police officer of accepting Rs 5 lakh bribe from TIPRA Motha supporters to influence election outcomes. He also expressed anger over alleged police inaction following reported attacks on BJP workers after the polls.
The controversy deepened further with claims that the MLA made personal and inflammatory remarks targeting the officer, including comments related to his role in tribal areas.
The incident has triggered a broader debate on the balance between political authority and law enforcement, with growing calls for accountability and protection of institutional integrity.
