Tribal woman alleges blackmail over private video; questions raised over police inaction

A serious allegation by a tribal woman in Kailashahar has triggered widespread concern. The woman has accused a man of secretly recording a private video and blackmailing her by threatening to circulate it on social media.

However, despite filing a complaint, no effective action has reportedly been taken by the police, raising several questions.

Sources said that a 36-year-old woman, a resident of Demdung Para under Fatikroy police station of Unakoti district, lodged a written complaint stating that one Pradip Debbarma of Rajkandi Para in Kumarghat allegedly lured her to a private location and physically assaulted her. She further alleged that the accused secretly recorded a video without her knowledge and had been blackmailing and harassing her for a long time by threatening to release the footage on social media.

The victim initially approached the Kailashahar Women police station to lodge a complaint. But, the incident reportedly occurred within the jurisdiction of Fatikroy police station, the Women police station made a GD entry and forwarded the complaint to Fatikroy police station for necessary action.

On Saturday (March 14) , police from Fatikroy police station reportedly spoke to the woman and assured her that the accused would be detained and an investigation would begin soon.

Meanwhile, the victim alleges that even till now the accused has not been summoned for questioning.

The woman has also alleged that the accused, along with his associates, visited her house last night and pressured her to withdraw the complaint. She also claimed that they threatened to kill her if she did not comply.

The victim and her family say they are living in fear and insecurity. She has questioned why the police have not taken action despite receiving a formal complaint. The alleged police inaction has also sparked anger and concern among local residents.
