Tripura crosses 7 MW milestone in Solar Power generation under PM Surya Ghar Yojana
Tripura has marked a significant milestone in its power sector by crossing the 7-megawatt (MW) mark in solar electricity generation under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. This achievement is being seen as a historic moment in the state’s journey toward energy self-reliance and sustainable development.
According to officials, electricity generated from rooftop solar installations across the state has now exceeded 7 MW, a landmark that reflects growing public participation in renewable energy initiatives. More than a numerical success, this progress signals Tripura’s steady shift toward clean energy and reduced dependence on conventional power sources.
The Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) stated that the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has opened up an unprecedented opportunity for ordinary electricity consumers. By installing solar panels on their rooftops, households are not only able to reduce their electricity bills to zero but are also earning additional income by supplying surplus power back to the grid.
Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024, the scheme aims to transform every household into a small power generation unit. The core objective is twofold: to ease the financial burden of electricity bills on families and to promote the use of renewable energy for an environmentally responsible future.
Public response to the scheme in Tripura has been encouraging. Official data reveals that 17,601 electricity consumers have already registered under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Of these, solar panel installations have been completed in 2,061 households, while 1,746 beneficiaries have received government subsidies. Under the scheme, a consumer is eligible for a subsidy of up to Rs 85,800, making rooftop solar adoption financially viable for middle- and lower-income families.
Energy experts note that even a 1-kilowatt solar plant can generate an average of around 100 units of electricity per month. This output is generally sufficient to meet the monthly electricity needs of a typical household. Any excess electricity generated can be exported to the grid, ensuring a steady additional income for consumers along with long-term savings.
TSECL has played a crucial role in the successful rollout of the scheme, providing technical support, awareness programs, and streamlined processes for installation and grid connectivity. Officials have set an ambitious target of increasing the state’s solar power generation capacity to 50 MW within the next year. If achieved, this would bring a transformative change to Tripura’s power sector and significantly strengthen its renewable energy footprint.
At a time when electricity costs are steadily rising, converting one’s home into a source of power is no longer just a modern idea—it is a practical path toward financial independence. In this context, TSECL has urged all electricity consumers to take advantage of the scheme by registering through the official government website or visiting the nearest TSECL office.
The message is clear, turn your home into a power station, bring your electricity bill down to zero, and create a new source of income from sunlight. As Tripura moves forward on the path of clean energy, the state’s growing solar capacity stands as a strong step toward a self-reliant and sustainable future.
