Two top militant leaders among an ISI trained insurgent held in Tripura

Two militant leaders, including one of them trained by the ISI of Pakistan, of the banned National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) were arrested late on Thursday night by the police and on Friday two separate local courts sent them jail custody, officials said.

Police said that two NLFT leaders Sachin Debbarma and Uppal Debbarma were arrested late on Thursday night at Simna in Western Tripura immediately after the duo entered into the state from Bangladesh through a clandestine route.

“Sachin was in Pakistan and he was trained by the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI)  of Pakistan before moving to Bangladesh,” a top police officer told IANS, refusing to be quoted.

A local court in Khowai district and another court in Agartala sent the militant leaders -- Sachin Debbarma and Uppal Debbarma – for five and seven days of jail custody respectively.

A senior police official said that the extremist leaders a few days ago were released from jail in Bangladesh after several years in prison.

From Bangladesh, they were involved in terror plots in Tripura for several years but they were arrested by the Bangladesh police several years ago.

After being released from jail in Bangladesh, they were looking for an opportunity to surrender to the Tripura police.

But acting on secret information the rebel leaders were caught by the police while crossing the India-Bangladesh border at Simna in West Tripura district.

They are now being interrogated by the senior police and intelligence officials.
