From underdog to potential first openly gay Dutch PM: Who is Rob Jetten?
At 38, Rob Jetten has catapulted from political obscurity to the center of Dutch power, challenging far-right leader Geert Wilders in an election too close to call. His cheerful energy, message of unity, and openly gay identity have made him a fresh symbol of progressive politics in an age of polarization.
The results of Netherlands election on Wednesday remain too close to call, with Jetten in a tight race against anti-Islam populist Geert Wilders for the largest parliamentary representation, according to BBC.
Jetten’s campaign benefited from unmatched media visibility. His cheerful demeanor and optimistic slogan, “Het kan wel” (“It can be done”), struck a chord with voters, offering a stark contrast to Wilders’ divisive rhetoric.
He even stepped into the spotlight when Wilders canceled an appearance over security concerns and participated in lighthearted TV programs, further enhancing his public profile.
A former climate minister under Mark Rutte, Jetten endured setbacks in the 2023 election, when D66 secured just nine seats, BBC reported.
Prior to national politics, he worked at ProRail and was elected to parliament in 2017. Known for his ambition and policy focus, he has occasionally drawn criticism from colleagues for being overly assertive, particularly on climate issues.
Raised in the southern province of Brabant, Jetten came out as gay early in life. Though his personal life has largely stayed private, he has spoken out against homophobia, including sharing messages he received to raise awareness.
He is now engaged to Argentine hockey player Nicolás Keenan, with their wedding planned next year.
Supporters compare Jetten to a younger Mark Rutte, highlighting his pragmatic, upbeat approach and ability to navigate political turbulence.
Still, he faces significant challenges, including addressing the housing shortage of roughly 400,000 homes and fulfilling ambitious promises to build new cities.
Despite minor missteps, including an awkward joke about Crown Princess Amalia during a campaign event, Jetten’s swift ascent demonstrates how a young, socially liberal politician can seize the spotlight and potentially reshape Dutch politics in record time.
