In a post on his social media platform, Trump said lawmakers should begin work "today" to abolish what he described as "expensive and unfair" birthright citizenship, while pledging his full support for such legislation.

Trump's reaction

"The Supreme Court upheld Birthright Citizenship, which is too bad for our Country, but we can easily make it up in Congress through Legislation, with the support of the President, that has now been determined during this process.

"No long and unwieldy Constitutional Amendment is necessary! Congress should start TODAY to work on ending expensive and unfair to our Country, Birthright Citizenship. They will have my Complete and Total Support!" Trump wrote.

Supreme Court verdict

Trump's remarks came hours after the US Supreme Court rejected his administration's attempt to restrict birthright citizenship, preserving the long-standing interpretation of the 14th Amendment that grants citizenship to nearly everyone born on American soil.

The ruling struck down an executive order signed by Trump that sought to deny automatic citizenship to children born in the United States to parents who are in the country illegally or on temporary visas.

Push for Legislative action

Despite the judicial setback, Trump indicated that he would pursue the issue through Congress instead of seeking a constitutional amendment.

His latest comments signal that restricting birthright citizenship is likely to remain a key part of his administration's broader immigration agenda.
