Preparation for Julie's character came naturally: Paoli Dam on playing sex worker-turned-politician in news web-series
Kolkata/IBNS: "Julie", a web series directed by Aritra Sen, features Bengali actress Paoli Dam in a layered role that traces her transformation from a sex worker in Kolkata’s red-light district to a political figure.
The trailer for the latest original web series from Addatimes was released on Wednesday, positioning 'Julie' as a socio-political drama exploring themes of power, survival, and societal hypocrisy.
In "Julie", the makers said, Sen crafts a narrative that reflects the dark interplay of politics, media manipulation, and the struggle for justice.
“Preparing for Julie’s character came naturally to me, thanks to my familiarity with the team, including our director, a friend since my debut,” Paoli told IBNS.

“We kept things simple, avoiding overcomplicating Julie’s character, letting the complexity shine through the scenes and dialogue instead. We took a spontaneous, organic approach,” she said.
Despite the heavy subject matter, the shoot brought its own set of challenges. “The most challenging part was beating the heat; last year, when we were shooting, Kolkata was hotter than this. But I thoroughly enjoyed it,” Paoli noted.
Joining Paoli in the series is a cast including Gourab Chatterjee, Koushik Sen, Shruti Das, and Sujoy Prasad Chatterjee. Each of them delivered compelling performances that add depth and tension to the narrative, the filmmaker said.

“Julie” delves into various other themes as well- love, betrayal, ambition, and public battles.
The trailer teases moments of romance and emotional conflicts, ensuring that the series appeals to a broad spectrum of viewers.

As the release date nears, the makers said all eyes will be on Paoli Dam and her daring portrayal of Julie - a woman who dares to rewrite her destiny.
