IPL 2025: Chennai Super Kings' win leaves Gujarat Titans unsure of finishing at top two
Ahmedabad/IBNS: Chennai Super Kings continued the trend of the bottom ranked teams playing the role of party poopers, as they annihilated Gujarat Titans winning by 83 runs.
It seemed that Chennai finally managed to figure out all aspects of their team as they had a near-perfect game, unfortunately, it happened to them on their last game of their season. They will take heart from the fact that now they can plan for future seasons, knowing what to look forward to with respect to their young brigade.
For Gujarat Titans, this was a wonderful chance that has gone begging to confirm a spot in the final two, and they will now have to wait for the outcome of the RCB and LSG, assuming PBKS-MI is not rained out.
They would also be worried that they are stumbling at the business end of the tournament, now having lost two in a row. And they will be even more worried about one of the successful top 3 trio, Jos Buttler not being available for the playoffs.
The day began with CSK winning the toss and choosing to bat first. Ayush Mhatre continued his rich vein of form, scoring a brisk 34 off just 17 balls, 28 of which were scored off a single Arshad Khan over. Urvil Patel and Devon Conway continued where he left off. Devon Conway got to a well-made half century, while Urvil too looked good while he was striking.
When Dube and Conway fell in quick succession, it looked like GT might wrest back some control, but Brevis made a quickfire 57, on the way scoring the second fastest 50 by a CSK batter, helping them finish at 230/5. The crowd seemed to await the anticipation of seeing Dhoni in the middle, but that was not to be. Prasidh Krishna was by far the best GT bowler, finishing with 2/22 off his 4 overs. None of the other bowlers managed to keep their economies under 10.
In their response, GT looked jaded and by the 5th over had lost their captain Shubman and their overseas batters Buttler and Rutherford with the scoreboard reading 30. Shahrukh Khan and Sai Sudharshan tried rebuilding, scoring a fifty-plus partnership, but the scoreboard pressure got to them, and Jadeja provided a twin strike in the 11th over, ensuring that the game was all but over.
With the game in the bag, CSK proceeded to give opportunities to their part-timers a go alongside their overseas pair of Noor Ahmed and Pathirana, who duly helped them complete the formalities, bowling GT out for a total of 147. Noor and Kamboj were the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets each.
The big margin of victory was however insufficient for CSK to get them off from the bottom of the table and they finish with the wooden spoon for the first time ever in the history of IPL, while GT will now spend the next two days watching the remaining games hoping they still somehow make it to the top two.
