A court in Agartala on Wednesday sentenced a 55-year-old man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment after convicting him in a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Police sources said that the judgment was delivered by the Court of the Additional District and Sessions Judge, Court No. 3, Agartala, West Tripura. The convict, Gopal Ghosh, was also fined Rs 50,000. In default of payment, he will have to undergo an additional three months of rigorous imprisonment.
The case stemmed from an incident reported on January 25, 2024, under Airport police station. Following the registration of the case, police carried out an investigation and submitted a charge sheet before the court on February 29, 2024.
The trial court, after examining the evidence presented during the proceedings, found the accused guilty and pronounced the conviction and sentence. The investigation was conducted by Sub-Inspector (SI) Rahul Das, who was posted at Airport police station at the time and is presently serving at New Capital Complex (NCC) police station under West Tripura district.
The conviction marks the successful conclusion of the investigation and prosecution in the case, Tripura Police said in its official press release.
