The Tripura State Committee of the All-India Lawyers Union (AILU) on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to the Governor of Tripura, Indrasena Reddy Nallu demanding the constitution of an independent judicial inquiry commission, headed by a sitting judge of the High Court of Tripura, to investigate the unnatural death of Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar.
In the memorandum, AILU stated that the sudden and unexplained death of the state's top police officer has raised serious concerns and public interest across Tripura. The organisation asserted that such a sensitive case requires a transparent, impartial and credible investigation rather than relying solely on the conventional investigative process.
The lawyers' body said that one of the fundamental principles of the rule of law is that justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done. It argued that a judicial inquiry headed by a sitting judge of the High Court of Tripura would be the most appropriate and acceptable mechanism to uncover the truth, dispel public doubts and uphold confidence in the justice delivery system.
AILU urged the Governor to consider the gravity of the incident and initiate or recommend the necessary constitutional steps for constituting a judicial inquiry. It also appealed for the preservation of all documents, electronic records, forensic samples and other evidence related to the case to ensure the integrity of the investigation.
Expressing confidence in an independent judicial probe, the organisation said such an inquiry would help ascertain the actual cause of the DGP's death, remove lingering doubts and reinforce public faith in the Constitution and the rule of law.
The memorandum was submitted in the presence of AILU representatives Haribal Debnath, L R Khadim, Bhaskar Debbarma, Rajashree Purkayastha and Uma Chanda.
