The Tripura state committee of the All India Lawyers’ Union (AILU) organized a protest on Friday demanding the removal of Manan Kumar Mishra, Chairman of the Bar Council of India (BCI).

The protest was held at the western gate of Agartala District and Sessions Court as part of a nationwide programme organized by the lawyers’ body.

The All India Lawyers’ Union alleged that power has long been concentrated in the hands of one individual in an important statutory body like the BCI. The organization also expressed concern over what it described as individual-centric authority instead of collective decision-making by the Council, as well as allegedly irresponsible remarks concerning recent student movements.

The AILU particularly raised questions over the democratic and institutional character of the BCI following an alleged directive issued on August 13 regarding the non-enrolment of students from the 2026 batch of the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR).

Against this backdrop, the organization said the protest was organized to demand protection of the independence, democratic character and collective decision-making process of the Bar Council of India.
