Tripura took another step towards technology-driven modernization of its transport and tourism sectors on Thursday with the launch of Uber's app-based cab service and a Tourist Information Centre at Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport, aimed at providing passengers and tourists with safer, easier and more convenient travel facilities.
The services were inaugurated by Transport and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, who also virtually flagged off the app-based cab service at Agartala Railway Station and Jogendranagar Railway Station, extending the digital transport network to the state's key travel hubs.
The initiative is expected to significantly improve last-mile connectivity for air and rail passengers while offering tourists a seamless and reliable transportation experience. Travellers can now choose between app-based cabs and auto-rickshaws, making travel from the airport and railway stations more accessible and convenient.
Addressing the inaugural programme, Chowdhury said the state government is committed to leveraging modern technology to transform Tripura into a safe, modern and tourist-friendly destination. He noted that despite the state's improved airport infrastructure, the absence of organized app-based transport had often created a negative impression among visitors, making the introduction of the new service a timely intervention.
The minister also said the newly inaugurated Tourism Information Centre at MBB Airport would help visitors access information about Tripura's major tourist destinations, enriching their travel experience and strengthening the state's tourism promotion efforts. He expressed confidence that improved transport, hospitality and tourism infrastructure would encourage more domestic and international tourists to visit the state and contribute to its overall economic development.
The launch of the services is being viewed as an important step towards modernizing Tripura’s transportation infrastructure and strengthening tourist-friendly facilities across the state.
Senior officials from the Transport and Tourism Department, Airports Authority of India, Airport Directorate and other departments attended the inaugural programme.
