The opposition CPI (M) on Monday alleged that the counting process of the Village Committee (VC) elections was marred by irregularities and claimed that the ruling BJP–Tipra Motha Party (TMP) alliance had turned the entire exercise into a “farce by throttling democracy”.

Addressing a press conference at the CPI (M) state headquarters here, party state secretary and Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, accompanied by former minister Manik Dey and former ADC Chief Executive Member (CEM) Radhacharan Debbarma, alleged that the ruling alliance misused power throughout the election process.

Chaudhury claimed that despite facing several challenges, the Left Front’s vote share had doubled compared to its performance in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections held in April 2026.

He alleged that although 74 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) were deployed for the VC elections, CPI (M) counting agents were not allowed to enter most counting centres.

“Several Village Committee seats were won by CPI (M) candidates, but even till 8 pm on Monday, the concerned Returning Officers were not allowed to officially declare the results,” Chaudhury claimed.

The CPI (M) leader further alleged that incidents of violence, intimidation and attacks on security personnel took place during the counting process, accusing the State Election Commission (SEC) and the state administration of failing to uphold the democratic process.

“It was evident that Tipra Motha would make gains in the VC elections, but the manner in which attacks were carried out against their alliance partners and opposition parties shows that there was no real ground-level alliance of the NDA as claimed by the Chief Minister,” Chaudhury said.

He also accused the government of suppressing the democratic rights of opposition parties and criticized the handling of the election process.

“Although the verdict was not spontaneous, we congratulate the voters of the state,” Chaudhury said, while alleging that the deployment of 74 CAPF companies was not properly utilized to ensure a free and fair counting process.
