Two opposition parties iincluding CPI(M) and Congress and ruling alliance Tipra- Motha have jointly demanded the cancellation of the nomination of a BJP-nominated candidate for Ward No. 12 in the upcoming Sonamura Nagar Panchayat elections in Sepahijala district, alleging that her candidature violates election guidelines.
The BJP candidate, Monowara Begum, is reportedly serving as a government-appointed ASHA worker. The opposition parties and Tipra-Motha leaders have alleged that despite holding the position, she is contesting the Nagar Panchayat election, which they claim is not permissible under the applicable government and Election Commission guidelines.
Representatives of the three parties submitted a demand to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Sonamura, who is also the Returning Officer, on Saturday, seeking the rejection of her nomination.
The opposition leaders alleged that Begum is posted in the same ward from which she intends to contest the election as a BJP candidate. They claimed that her position as an ASHA worker could give her an opportunity to influence or induce voters in the ward.
They further argued that, according to Election Commission guidelines, individuals receiving remuneration from government departments or offices are not eligible to participate in elections.
The opposition leaders said they were now awaiting the Returning Officer’s decision on their complaint and would closely monitor the action taken in response to their demand.
