Fatikroy Police of Unakoti district and Assam Rifles have seized 40,000 Yaba tablets worth approximately Rs 1.60 crore from a goods-carrying dumper at Radhanagar under same police station.

According to Kumarghat Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) David Debbarma, acting on a tip-off, personnel from Assam Rifles and Fatikroy Police launched a joint anti-narcotics operation and intercepted a dumper bearing registration number TR-01-AT-1541 at Radhanagar, near the Assam Rifles camp.

A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 40,000 Yaba tablets, with an estimated market value of Rs 1.60 crore, the SDPO said.

The driver, however, managed to flee from the spot. The vehicle was reportedly coming from the North Tripura side, but its intended destination remains unclear.

Following the operation, the dumper and the seized narcotics were handed over to Fatikroy Police by Assam Rifles. Police have registered a case under the relevant provisions of the anti-narcotics law and initiated an investigation, Debbarma said.

The seizure has once again brought the issue of drug trafficking in Tripura into focus. Allegations of influential individuals having links with narcotics networks have surfaced on several occasions, raising questions about the effectiveness of efforts to dismantle the trafficking networks.

Although the latest seizure highlights the role of Assam Rifles in the anti-drug drive, police have described it as a joint operation. Assam Rifles had also reportedly achieved success in intercepting narcotics in Kumarghat a few days ago.

The latest incident has renewed questions about the independent efforts and track record of the police in combating drug trafficking.

Observers believe that seizures alone will not be sufficient to curb the menace unless the masterminds behind the trafficking networks are identified and brought to justice. The effectiveness of the authorities in tracing the supply chains and taking action against those operating behind the scenes will remain crucial in the fight against narcotics in Tripura.
