The Tripura state committee of the CPI(M) has expressed deep grief over the demise of veteran Left leader, women’s movement organizer and former legislator Gouri Bhattacharjee, who passed away at her residence in Sinhaihani area of Agartala Airport road at the age of 95 on Saturday.

According to the CPI(M) state committee, Gouri Bhattacharjee had been suffering from various age-related ailments for a long time. She had recently undergone treatment at a private hospital in Agartala . She is survived by a son, two daughters and several relatives.

After her death, the mortal remains of veteran leader were brought to Tripura Assembly complex, where many ministers, MLAs and deputy speaker of the assembly paid their last tributes

Former Chief Minister and veteran CPI (M) leader Manik Sarkar  has also expressed his dondolences on demise of Gouri Bhattacharjee.

Late Gouri Bhattacharjee joined the CPI (M) in the early 1970s and became a member of the party. At a time when no candidate other than the Congress nominee was considered capable of winning a Gram Panchayat election, she contested and won the Panchayat election in 1972, while maintaining her identity as a resident of communist.

As an elected representative, she remained actively involved in addressing various problems faced by the people and developed a close relationship with the local population. She was subsequently elected to the Tripura Legislative Assembly twice from the Barjala constituency in 1977 and 1983. She consistently raised issues concerning working people and fought for women’s rights in the Assembly.

The CPI (M) through a statement said that Gouri Bhattacharjee was associated with the Ganatantrik Nari Samiti, one of the state’s largest women’s organizations. She initially served as a joint secretary and later as vice-president. As a leading figure of the women’s movement, she travelled extensively across Tripura and carried out organizational responsibilities.

The CPI (M) state committee expressed profound grief at her passing and paid tribute to her memory. The party conveyed its heartfelt condolences to her son, daughters and other family members.

The statement said that Gouri Bhattacharjee’s contribution to the expansion of the Left movement in Tripura would be remembered with respect.
