Govt plans to make early screening of Thalassemia mandatory: CM

In order to put an end to diseases like Thalassemia and Haemophilia, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Monday said that the state government is planning to ensure early screening for diseases like Thalassemia and Haemophilia.

The Chief Minister on Monday participated in the observation of the World Thalassemia Day organized by the Indian Academy of Paediatrics and National Health Mission Tripura and Thalassemia Society on Monday.

Addressing the program, the Chief Minister said that the main aim to observe this day is to create awareness to prevent diseases like Thalassemia.

He said in his inaugural address that everyone should create awareness about thalassemia and Haemophilia.

“People struggling with blood disorders need to be supported. The state government is worried about thalassemia disease. Thalassemia is a blood-related disease. This disease spreads through generations. Awareness is needed of how to prevent it. The government is also planning to make it mandatory to ensure early screening for diseases like thalassemia, haemophilia deceases”, he said adding that awareness is needed on how to prevent thalassemia disease.

The Chief Minister, who is also a doctor, said that about 1.5 to 2 lakh people in India are affected by thalassemia and there are about 5 crore thalassemia carriers.

“10 to 15 thousand children is suffering from thalassemia in the country every year. While around 383 patients in Tripura are suffering from thalassemia. Our government will definitely find a solution to how we can prevent the disease early.  In the coming days we have to reduce the number of patients”, he said.

Dr Saha also said that if the government can control viruses like Covid because of Prime Minister Narendra Modi then controlling thalassemia diseases wouldn’t be a big issue.

Dr. Swapna Saha of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics, Secretary of the Health Department Dr. Debashish Basu, Director of Health Department Dr. Subhashis Debbarma and others were present as distinguished guests in the event.
