Reaffirming the district administration's commitment to completing the remaining works of ongoing flood protection embankment at Belonia and strengthening flood preparedness in accordance with the directives of Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, the South Tripura District Magistrate (DM) Md. Sajjad P on Monday inspected the ongoing flood protection embankment .

Speaking to reporters after the inspection, the District Magistrate said the Chief Minister had recently convened a review meeting with all District Magistrates across the state, directing them to closely monitor embankments and other flood mitigation measures. Following these instructions, the South Tripura administration has intensified supervision of all ongoing flood protection projects to ensure quality and timely execution.

The District Magistrate stated that nearly 80 per cent of the approximately 15-kilometre-long embankment at Belonia, undertaken after the devastating floods of 2024, has already been completed. He expressed confidence that the remaining portion of the project would be finished before the upcoming festive season.

Responding to concerns regarding depressions at certain sections of the embankment, Md. Sajjad P explained that construction had been accelerated before the onset of the monsoon, leaving insufficient time for the newly filled earth to settle before brick soiling was carried out. He said the Water Resources Department has assured that these affected stretches will undergo permanent restoration with double-layer brick soiling after the monsoon, when weather conditions become favourable.

He also informed that proposals have been submitted to construct additional retaining walls at vulnerable points and improve road connectivity in areas where residents have faced inconvenience due to the embankment work. As part of a government initiative, bamboo plantation will also be undertaken along the embankment to reinforce its stability and enhance long-term flood resilience.

Reassuring residents, the District Magistrate said Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha is personally monitoring the progress of the project. He added that all pending issues would be addressed and that the administration remains determined to ensure Belonia is better protected from floods and does not witness a recurrence of the devastation experienced in 2024.
