A major smuggling attempt was foiled after police intercepted a truck carrying a huge consignment of contraband Eskuf cough syrup concealed beneath crates of eggs at the Churaibari check post in Assam on Monday before entering Tripura border.
Sources said that the truck was on its way to Agartala when it was stopped for inspection at the interstate checkpost. During the search, police recovered a large quantity of Eskuf cough syrup hidden under the egg consignment.
The truck driver was arrested in connection with the seizure, and the vehicle has been taken into custody.
Sources said the seized contraband is estimated to have a black-market value of crores, making it one of the biggest cough syrup seizures in the region in recent times.
Assam police said that the truck driver loaded this consignment from Ranchi city and was moving towards Agartala for delivery of the contraband items.
Police have launched an investigation to identify the smuggling network behind the consignment and to ascertain its origin and intended destination. Further details are awaited.
